Origin Story

Matt spent the first 13 years of his career working in traditional out-patient physical therapy clinics. He soon realized how frequently his patients’ care was being negatively influenced by their insurance coverage. Patients would have to wait weeks before they could be seen or be denied coverage for certain types of treatment, ultimately negatively impacting their ability to recover from injury.

It was these frustrations that led Matt to create Leading Edge Physical Therapy. By electing to be out-of-network with your insurance provider, we can focus solely on the issues that matter most to you and not be limited by what your insurance is willing to cover.

Whether you were recently injured, recovering from surgery, wanting to prevent future injuries, or improve your golf game, we can help!

Matt’s Background

Matt Hennings, DPT, OCS was born and raised in West Palm Beach, FL, where he grew up playing sports of all kinds; baseball was his first passion, but he also played basketball, soccer, golf and swam. He graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Health Science from the University of Central Florida in 2007 and then earned a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from UCF in 2010 (Go Knights!). In 2011, Matt decided to leave the east coast and moved to the Salem area.

Since 2010, Matt has been pursuing his passion for working with golfers; not only to recover from injury, but also to improve their performance through individualized treatment plans focusing on mobility, stability and strength. He is the only medical professional in the Salem area with Level 3 certification through the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI). Throughout his career, he has helped golfers of all ages and abilities, including juniors, collegiate athletes and seniors.

While spending seven years working within the same office as Salem’s top orthopedic surgeons, Matt developed a passion for assisting his patients as they recover from surgery. He has particular expertise with shoulder, hip, knee and foot/ankle injuries/surgeries. Matt has even helped to develop rehabilitation protocols for some of the most common sports surgeries, including Achilles tendon repair, ACL reconstruction, hip labral repair and rotator cuff repair. Matt loves watching his clients progress and return to the activities that matter most to them!

When not in the clinic, Matt enjoys golfing, woodworking, and spending time with his wife and two children.
